Mega-Object Drawing Project
Why?
In the spring semester of my junior year, I took a drawing course. Our final consisted of two major projects. One was the Self-Portrait Project. The other was a mega-object drawing. This drawing was supposed to be a very large drawing of some group of similar objects. I chose to draw my old, beat-up riding boots.
All my life I have loved horses. Ten years ago, I took my first riding lesson and horses became my passion. For my sixteenth birthday, my grandmother bought me a sixteen hand bay thoroughbred mare named Your Knightmare, although she was more commonly know as May. Around the same time, I bought myself a new pair of expensive riding boots. They were well-worth the expense, being comfortable and resilient. For the next two years, May and I wore those boots to pieces, as we practiced counter-bending, leg-yielding, and jumping. At eighteen, I fell ill with Crohn's Disease and could barely take care of myself, let alone May. Giving her away still remains the hardest decision I've ever had to make and to this day it still hurts immensely to think about. I've stopped riding, but I'll always hold on to these boots to remind me of her.
How?
My drawing is done in charcoal on 22" x 30" paper. I'm used artificial lighting from the left side. I finished the drawing with a spray-on final fixative. In all, the drawing took about seven and a half hours of work.
